Did Bangladesh-Bordering Districts Experience the Highest Voter Surge According to BJP's ECI Data?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 23 (NationPress) The West Bengal districts adjacent to the international border with Bangladesh have experienced the most significant growth in voter registration since 2002, the last year when the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was conducted in the state, according to the BJP's claims based on data from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP's Information Technology Cell and central observer for West Bengal, shared a statement on social media on Sunday morning, asserting that, per ECI statistics, out of the top ten districts with the greatest increase in voters, nine are bordering Bangladesh.
“From 2002, when the SIR was last executed by the ECI, until 2025, West Bengal has recorded a remarkable 66 percent surge in registered voters—from 4.58 crore to 7.63 crore. ECI data indicates that among the top ten districts with the most substantial increase in voters, nine are on the border with Bangladesh,” Malviya stated in his social media update.
Malviya also pointed out that the nine border districts with the steepest voter increase include: Uttar Dinajpur (105.49 percent rise), Malda (94.58 percent), Murshidabad (87.65 percent), South 24 Parganas (83.30 percent), Jalpaiguri (82.3 percent), Cooch Behar (76.52 percent), North 24 Parganas (72.18 percent), Nadia (71.46 percent), and Dakshin Dinajpur (70.94 percent).
“The sole non-border district in the top ten is Birbhum (73.44 percent). These infiltrators are now dispersed throughout Bengal and beyond, forming a significant part of Mamata Banerjee's electoral base. This is why she is earnestly trying to protect them,” he added.
The BJP representative remarked that Chief Minister Banerjee's strong opposition to the SIR is “not surprising.”
The Trinamool Congress has been against the SIR, alleging that the process is an “indirect strategy” to enforce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.
Conversely, the BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress of opposing the SIR to “shield” the names of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants from being removed from the voter list, given that they make up a crucial part of its voter bank.
