Kolkata, Dec 20 (NationPress) A total of 3,000 micro-observers are set to oversee the hearing sessions regarding claims and objections to the draft voters' list in West Bengal, commencing next week.

The sessions for this second phase of the three-state Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative are anticipated to kick off on December 27, following the publication of the draft voters’ list on December 16.

A representative from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state indicated that the appointment of these 3,000 micro-observers was made to ensure one observer per hearing table.

"Each hearing table will consist of one electoral registration officer, one assistant electoral registration officer, and one micro-observer. This arrangement aims to eliminate any potential irregularities during the hearing process, ensuring that no legitimate voter’s name is omitted and no fraudulent names remain," the representative stated.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), individuals employed by the central government, or those in central public sector undertakings or public sector banks at Group-B level or higher, will fill these micro-observer positions.

The micro-observers will operate under the direct oversight of special roll observers to monitor the ongoing revision process within the state.

Claims and objections hearings will take place exclusively at the offices of the District Magistrates, who also serve as district electoral officers.

The ECI has tasked the District Magistrates with safeguarding the special roll observers and micro-observers throughout the hearing sessions.

Additionally, a request has been made to the Union Home Ministry for the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to ensure security at the CEO’s office in central Kolkata without delay.

It is understood that, as per the ECI’s proposal, the CAPF presence will persist until the model code of conduct is implemented following the announcement of Assembly election dates in the state.

The SIR initiative in West Bengal commenced on November 4 and will culminate with the release of the final voters’ list on February 14 of the coming year. Subsequently, the ECI will announce polling and counting dates for the significant Assembly elections.

Point of View

It is essential to view the deployment of micro-observers in West Bengal as a robust step towards transparency in the electoral process. This initiative not only reinforces the credibility of the electoral system but also assures citizens that their voices will be accurately represented.
