Kolkata, Jan 24 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed a total of 294 senior micro-observers, with one assigned to each of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal, to oversee the current hearing sessions regarding claims and objections on the draft voters' list.

These senior micro-observers are an additional layer above the 6,600 micro-observers previously designated by the Commission for this task. According to sources within the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office in West Bengal, there are notable differences in rank and responsibilities between micro-observers and their senior counterparts.

While a micro-observer supervises a single hearing center, a senior micro-observer oversees all hearing centers within a specific assembly constituency.

Micro-observers are typically selected from direct employees of the central government, central public sector undertakings (PSUs), or public sector banks (PSBs), predominantly from Group-B categories, with a few from Group-A.

In contrast, all senior micro-observers belong to Group-A categories, either from direct central government roles or from central PSUs and PSBs.

While micro-observers are currently stationed in West Bengal, senior micro-observers have been chosen from neighboring states, including Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

“The CEO, West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, recently reached out to his counterparts in Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand to send officers for these senior micro-observer positions. The selected officers will commence their duties in West Bengal on January 26, and will remain until the hearing session concludes, after which the final voters’ list will be published,” stated an insider from the CEO’s office.

The deadline for concluding these hearing sessions is February 7, while the final voters’ list is set for publication on February 14. However, the Commission has indicated that these deadlines could potentially be pushed back.

Following the publication of the final voters’ list, the Commission is anticipated to announce polling dates for the significant Assembly elections in West Bengal scheduled for later this year.

Point of View

The deployment of senior micro-observers reflects the Election Commission's commitment to transparency and fairness in the electoral process. Ensuring that each voice is heard during this critical phase underscores the integrity of our democracy, and such measures are essential for maintaining public trust.
