Perth, Nov 16 (NationPress) Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie stated that pacer Brendan Doggett is entirely prepared to step into the playing eleven if chosen for the first Ashes Test against England, commencing on November 21 in Perth.
With Josh Hazlewood sidelined for the first Test due to a hamstring injury, Doggett, aged 31, is in line to become Australia’s 472nd Test cricketer. A Test debut in Perth would also make him just the third Indigenous Australian to participate in Test cricket, following in the footsteps of Gillespie and Scott Boland.
"He’s among the fastest bowlers in Australia. He possesses a strong work ethic, is as fit as a fiddle, and is ready for action. England might see an opening (with Cummins and Hazlewood absent), but I believe the Australian seam attack has what it takes to succeed," Gillespie commented on ABC Radio on Sunday.
Doggett’s journey has been anything but ordinary. He didn’t make it to a representative side until his twenties, eventually debuting for the former CA XI in the one-day cup in October 2016.
He received his first Australian squad call-up for the Tests against Pakistan in 2018, just months after the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Although injuries hindered his progress, Doggett’s transfer to South Australia in 2021 to lead their bowling attack has proven beneficial.
In the last domestic season, Doggett played a pivotal role in South Australia’s first Sheffield Shield title victory since 1995/96 - taking 33 wickets at an average of 24.15, including match figures of 11-140, which are the best-ever figures for a bowler in a Shield final.
"His journey toward potentially earning a Baggy Green is not typical in today’s game. It highlights the importance of our local competitions and the dedication to mastering one’s craft," Gillespie added.
After the opening Ashes match in Perth, the second Test will be a day-night game, scheduled from December 4-8 in Brisbane. Adelaide will host the third Test from December 17-21, followed by the traditional Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26-30. The Ashes series will conclude with the fifth and final Test set to take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 4-8, 2026.
