Seoul, April 4 (NationPress) The primary opposition party in South Korea, the Democratic Party (DP), expressed its strong approval of the Constitutional Court's ruling to remove President Yoon Suk Yeol from office, labeling it a significant victory for the citizens.
Following the announcement of the court's decision, Rep. Cho Seung-rae, a senior spokesperson for the DP, conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the populace for once again guiding the nation through a crisis.
“Today signifies a momentous occasion where we have upheld the Constitution and protected democracy against those who aimed to undermine it,” Cho remarked.
He called on Yoon and the People Power Party (PPP) to respectfully accept the people's will and the court's verdict and to genuinely apologize to the nation, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
“We are committed to fulfilling the people's will with increased humility and resolve,” he stated.
Earlier that day, the Constitutional Court unanimously confirmed the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, leading to his removal due to his brief enactment of martial law in December.
The ruling, delivered by acting court chief Moon Hyung-bae and broadcast live, took immediate effect, mandating the nation to conduct a snap presidential election to choose Yoon's successor within 60 days, with many anticipating the election to occur on June 3, according to Yonhap news agency.
Yoon was impeached by the opposition-led National Assembly in mid-December on accusations of breaching the Constitution and laws by declaring martial law on December 3, deploying military forces to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting against the decree, and instructing the arrest of politicians.
