Jaipur, Aug 5 (NationPress) In a significant security incident, Mahendra Prasad, the manager of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) guest house situated at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer, has been detained on allegations of espionage.

Prasad, who hails from Almora in Uttarakhand, was taken into custody by security personnel late on Monday night.

The sensitive nature of this location, often visited by prominent Indian defence experts and scientists, has elevated concerns regarding his detention.

Jaisalmer SP Abhishek Shivhare affirmed that the suspect would be presented to the Joint Interrogation Committee on Tuesday for in-depth questioning.

Initial reports indicate that Mahendra Prasad may have been transmitting sensitive data to Pakistan.

He has been employed at this critical DRDO facility since 2018, during which he interacted with numerous senior Army officials and scientists engaged in weapon testing and military exercises.

During his preliminary interrogation, Prasad allegedly revealed that he received a dubious phone call in 2020, prompting him to send a slip detailing the dates of guests' stays at the establishment.

He insisted it was a singular event and denied relaying any additional information to Pakistan.

However, intelligence agencies had been keeping a watch on him after discovering calls to and from Pakistan on his mobile device. His phone is currently undergoing forensic examination, with authorities aiming to retrieve vital evidence.

This case further underscores the vulnerabilities of Rajasthan's border region, which extends over 1,070 kilometers along Pakistan and hosts several strategic military facilities and airbases.

Indian intelligence services remain highly vigilant from Hindumalkot (in Sri Ganganagar) to Bakhasar (in Barmer), closely monitoring any suspicious activities.

The arrest of Mahendra Prasad marks the latest in a succession of espionage-related arrests in Rajasthan.

Since March 2025, five individuals have faced similar accusations.

These include Pathan Khan, apprehended near the Chandan Field Firing Range under the Official Secrets Act on March 26.

On May 23, Mohammad Qasim (32), from Deeg, was detained by the Delhi Special Cell upon his return from Pakistan, and the NIA arrested CRPF ASI Motiram Jat for leaking sensitive data.

On May 28, Shakoor Khan, who served at the Jaisalmer Employment Office since 2000 and was a personal assistant to former minister Saleh Mohammad Khan from 2008 to 2013, was detained and later arrested on June 3.

Mohammad Haseen (34), the brother of Qasim, who was found to be in contact with a Pakistani Embassy official, was arrested on May 30.

In response, security measures have been intensified around key defence installations, with all movements in border areas under strict surveillance.
