Will WPL 2026 See Harmanpreet and Mandhana Shine in MI vs RCB Opener?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 9 (NationPress) A thrilling kickoff is set for the Women’s Premier League 2026 as the reigning champions Mumbai Indians face off against the 2024 titleholders, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in the inaugural match at the DY Patil Stadium this Friday.
In anticipation of this highly-anticipated clash, captains Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana outlined their strategies to steer their teams through this multi-franchise tournament.
During an appearance on JioHotstar, MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur emphasized the significance of enjoying the game while supporting fellow players amidst the pressures of top-tier cricket.
“Pressure is an inevitable part of any format, whether it’s WPL, international cricket, or domestic matches. You set high expectations for yourself and aim for excellence. However, the key is to enjoy your time on the field. Beyond dealing with pressure, I aim to relish my game,” stated Harmanpreet.
The MI leader also mentioned that her priority as captain is to ensure players feel comfortable, despite the weight of leading a team that has clinched both the Women’s ODI World Cup and the WPL.
RCB captain Smriti Mandhana highlighted the necessity for a robust work ethic and consistency as she seeks to bring her international batting prowess into the league.
“I believe this season’s RCB squad is exceptionally balanced. We had a fruitful mega auction. I consistently remind the team to emphasize our work ethic. The outcome on the field is beyond our control,” Mandhana remarked. “I’ve been in good form over the past two years, and it’s my goal to transfer that success from international cricket to the WPL,” she added.
JioStar expert Veda Krishnamurthy noted that Mandhana will face heightened expectations this season, especially with Ellyse Perry unavailable.
“Smriti Mandhana has grown as a cricketer. She’s more adept at using her feet and navigating the leg side against spin, which is a significant advantage. However, the absence of Ellyse Perry presents a considerable challenge. Smriti will not only play a captain’s role but also bear the responsibility of advancing the team,” Veda commented.
While RCB boasts power hitters like Grace Harris, Richa Ghosh, and Georgia Voll, Veda pointed out that the stability Perry provided over the years will be hard to replicate.
“It’s impossible to duplicate what Perry contributed. She brought leadership, energy, and runs when it mattered most. Smriti must ensure to anchor the innings, even while maintaining a strike rate of 150,” she noted.
Highlighting the strength of the Mumbai Indians, Veda singled out the franchise’s core of accomplished match-winners.
“They have Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur, Amanjot Kaur, and Amelia Kerr forming a formidable top order. Adding Shabnim Ismail to the bowling lineup gives them 16 overs of international-quality bowling. Over the years, four or five players have frequently been the difference-makers for them, which makes MI exceptionally dangerous,” she emphasized.
As the WPL 2026 kicks off, the opening match promises to deliver an exceptional contest between a well-established Mumbai Indians team and a Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad aiming to adapt and excel without one of its key assets.
