Bengaluru, Feb 28 (NationPress) Mumbai Indians' captain Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged that her team experienced a challenging day as they faced a heavy nine-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. "I believe today was one of those instances when things didn't unfold as planned," Harmanpreet remarked post-match.

"We had difficulties accumulating runs during the initial six overs, found some rhythm in the middle overs, yet couldn't maintain that momentum. Scoring 120 was never going to suffice against a strong opponent. We performed admirably in the last three matches and are still in a favorable position. I encourage the team to put this game behind us as more crucial matches lie ahead," she further stated.

The Delhi Capitals, spearheaded by a brilliant performance from Meg Lanning and a disciplined bowling display, effortlessly chased Mumbai’s total, reaching 124 with 35 balls remaining.

Mumbai's difficulties began early as they lost wickets consistently after choosing to bat first. Even with a solid start from Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews, the innings lacked the necessary momentum. Jess Jonassen (3-25) and Minnu Mani (3-17) were the main architects of MI's downfall, keeping them on the back foot.

Shikha Pandey provided DC with their first breakthrough, dismissing Bhatia (11) during the PowerPlay. Annabel Sutherland further restricted MI's progress, leading to Matthews being dismissed for 22. The middle order faltered, with Harmanpreet Kaur (22) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (18) falling quickly. MI's lower order failed to recover, as Jonassen and Mani decimated the lineup, limiting them to a mere 123/9.

In pursuit of 124, DC started strong. Meg Lanning (60 not out off 49) and Shafali Verma (43 off 28) applied significant pressure on Mumbai’s bowlers. Lanning, particularly, displayed her class, capitalizing on loose deliveries and achieving her record-breaking eighth WPL fifty. Despite one wicket for Amanjot Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues (15 *) ensured a smooth chase as DC finished the target in just 14.1 overs. Lanning fittingly capped the win with a well-placed two through midwicket.

With this triumph, Delhi Capitals ascend to the top of the WPL table, while Mumbai aims to rebound in their forthcoming match.
