Aizawl, Jan 26 (NationPress) In a significant operation, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police successfully confiscated a substantial amount of explosive materials in the Aizawl district of Mizoram, as reported by an official on Sunday.

A spokesperson from the Defence stated that, acting on precise intelligence regarding the transportation of explosives in the Durtlang Leitan region of Aizawl district, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police set up a mobile vehicle checkpoint on the Durtlang to Kawnpui route on Saturday night.

The vigilant security team halted a vehicle and during a meticulous search, uncovered 7,000 variously colored electric detonators and detained an individual named Runmawia (34).

The detained person along with the seized items has been handed over to Mizoram Police.

A senior officer of the Mizoram Police indicated that while they are interrogating the apprehended individual, there are suspicions that the electric detonators may be intended for smuggling to either Myanmar or Bangladesh.

Earlier on January 18, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police collaboratively seized 30 gelatin sticks and 20 detonators from a vehicle near the Aijal Club on Khatla Road in Aizawl.

The driver of that vehicle, identified as Hmingthansanga (42) from Hnahthial district, was also arrested.

Additionally, on January 15, police confiscated a large stockpile of arms and ammunition while they were being supplied by an insurgent group based in Myanmar to the rebel faction in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of southeast Bangladesh.

A representative from the Mizoram Home Department mentioned that five individuals were arrested in connection with the arms confiscation.

Among those detained is a prominent leader of the Chin National Front (CNF), an insurgent organization from Myanmar.

The arms and ammunition seized from Saithah village in the bordering Mamit District included six AK-47 rifles, 10,050 AK-47 cartridges, and 13 magazines.

The official stated that the confiscated weapons were intended for a transaction between the CNF, a notable rebel group from Myanmar, and the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF-P), another insurgent faction operating in the CHT.

The Assam Rifles are tasked with securing the 510 km unfenced international border of Mizoram with Myanmar, while the Border Security Force (BSF) safeguards the 318 km unfenced borders with Bangladesh.

The recent seizures highlight the alarming issue of illicit arms and explosives trading through Mizoram's porous international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, despite increased vigilance from border enforcement agencies to combat trans-border illegal activities.
