Itanagar, Nov 4 (NationPress) The concluding segment of the ‘Battlefield Trek’ commemorating the 63rd Walong Day will take place on November 14-15 from Ashi Hill to Tri-Junction Post in Arunachal Pradesh. This trek wraps up a series of events aimed at paying homage to the courageous soldiers who fought in the 1962 Battle of Walong, as stated by officials on Tuesday.
According to Defence spokesman Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, approximately 20 civilians will join Indian Army personnel in retracing the historic routes where valor, sacrifice, and resilience marked India’s military history.
Ashi Hill is pivotal in the history of the Battle of Walong, where Indian forces bravely confronted a numerically superior Chinese army, demonstrating remarkable courage against daunting challenges. The Tri-Junction Post symbolizes the initial counter-offensive launched by the Indian Army during the 1962 War, representing the unwavering spirit and commitment of Indian soldiers. This trek serves as a heartfelt tribute to those heroes who defended the nation’s honor and inspired countless generations with their unmatched bravery.
This event also signifies the conclusion of the Battlefield Trek series in the Walong sector, each trek revisiting significant battle sites and reconnecting participants with a rich legacy of courage, endurance, and national pride, the spokesman explained.
He further noted that the Battlefield Trek series highlights the Indian Army's ongoing commitment to honor its heroes, foster historical awareness, stimulate patriotism among the youth, and celebrate the indomitable spirit of Walong.
On November 15, as part of the commemoration, various events will occur in Walong, Arunachal Pradesh. These include a wreath-laying ceremony, a film commemorating the 63rd Walong Day, followed by a jazz band performance, a light and sound show, sand art, and a drone display, along with interactions with war veterans.
The following day, November 16, another wreath-laying ceremony at the Walong memorial will take place, followed by the closing ceremony.
The Indian Army observes Walong Day annually in mid-November to honor the extraordinary courage exhibited by a few hundred Indian soldiers against well-armed combatants of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
In addition to active military members, government officials, veterans, and the next of kin of those who sacrificed their lives in the 27-day-long Battle of Walong, numerous civilians also take part in the commemorative events to honor these brave individuals.
