Is There a Forged Letter Linked to Sarbananda Sonowal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 19 (NationPress) A First Information Report (FIR) was filed on Monday regarding a contentious letter that circulated under the name of Union Minister and prominent BJP figure Sarbananda Sonowal, allegedly recommending a "course correction" as the Assam Assembly elections approach later this year.
A senior official indicated that the complaint was lodged at the Parliament Street Police Station in response to directives from Sonowal himself. Following the case registration, the investigation has been transferred to the Delhi Police’s Public Information Technology and Regulatory (PITR) unit for comprehensive examination.
The letter, which gained extensive traction on various social media platforms, purportedly bears Sonowal’s official letterhead and is addressed to the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. It allegedly discusses the existing "ground situation" in Assam and suggests specific corrective measures ahead of the Assembly elections.
However, Sonowal has firmly distanced himself from the letter, deeming it as "completely fake, fabricated and misleading."
In his statement, the Union Minister emphasized that neither he nor his office had issued such correspondence, labeling the incident a serious crime involving forgery, impersonation, and the misuse of government identity.
"This document is unrelated to me or my office. It represents a blatant attempt to mislead the public and damage the reputation of constitutional authorities," Sonowal stated. He also urged law enforcement agencies to prioritize the investigation and take strict legal action against those who created and disseminated the forged letter.
The Union Minister called on both the media and the public to act cautiously, advising them to refrain from sharing or relying on unverified information and to confirm facts only through official channels.
According to police officials, the FIR has been filed under applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code concerning forgery, impersonation, and the spread of false information.
Currently, efforts are underway to trace the origin of the document, follow its digital trail, and establish accountability.
The incident has gained importance as Assam approaches the Assembly elections, amid rising worries about the misuse of digital platforms to spread misinformation during politically sensitive times.
