Raipur/Durg, April 7 (NationPress) A significant blaze erupted on Tuesday at Power Plant-2 (PBS-2) within the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) located in Durg district, Chhattisgarh, following an explosion in the 25 MW turbine area.

Dense black smoke enveloped the vicinity as flames reached approximately 10 feet high, instigating panic among plant personnel.

Reports indicate that five individuals were injured in the incident—comprising two regular staff members and three contract workers. One worker suffered a leg fracture, while the others incurred minor injuries. All affected individuals received prompt medical assistance.

While the fire has been successfully extinguished, the foremost concern remains the safety and welfare of all employees and contractors.

A thorough investigation will be initiated to determine the underlying cause, with enhanced safety measures expected to follow.

Initial assessments suggest that the fire rapidly spread after the turbine explosion. Workers on-site were able to evacuate through a back exit, averting a potentially catastrophic situation.

Fire response teams acted quickly, with over a dozen fire tenders dispatched to the scene without delay. Senior officials from the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) also arrived on-site promptly.

The fire is now fully under control; however, the full extent of the damage remains to be evaluated.

Early observations reveal that several cables suffered damage during the incident. The exact cause of the explosion and fire is still under investigation.

Another source from plant management noted, “The swift action of the fire services and the quick thinking displayed by workers in utilizing the back exit were crucial in preventing loss of life. We are grateful that the situation was contained without significant casualties.”

Bhilai Steel Plant, a key facility of SAIL, has experienced similar incidents in the past, raising calls for more stringent adherence to safety protocols during operations and maintenance.
