New Delhi, March 13 (NationPress) The government is steadfast in its intention to maintain the fiscal deficit within the newly revised estimates for FY26, as it introduces the second batch of supplementary demands for grants, stated Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday.

While addressing the Lok Sabha regarding the Supplementary Demands for Grants (Second Batch) for 2025–26, the Finance Minister assured that the proposed additional spending will adhere to the fiscal deficit targets outlined in the Union Budget for 2026–27.

"I want to emphasize that with all the extra provisions we are introducing through technical and cash supplementary demands, no Member of Parliament should question our ability to meet the fiscal deficit target presented during the Budget session in this House," she remarked.

The Budget for 2026–27 clearly indicates a fiscal deficit target of 4.3 percent of GDP for the year ending March 31, 2027, which is lower than the revised estimate of 4.4 percent of GDP for 2025-26. This marks a continuation of the government's commitment to fiscal consolidation toward achieving a lower deficit target in future years.

FM Sitharaman further reiterated, "I would like to stress that the commitments made in this House, including those concerning the second Supplementary Demands for Grants, will remain within the fiscal deficit target presented in Parliament on February 1, 2026."

The Supplementary Demands encompass a gross expenditure of Rs 2.81 lakh crore, consisting of 61 grant requests. Sitharaman reiterated that these supplementary demands are in line with the fiscal deficit figures mentioned in the Budget.

She assured that there will be no shortage of fertilizers for farmers, as adequate provisions have already been made. "The Economic Stabilisation Fund will provide the necessary fiscal space for India to navigate global challenges," she added, noting that Rs 57,381.84 crore has been set aside for this Fund.
