Why Were Foreign Nationals Detained in Pushkar Over Palestine Support?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Feb 3 (NationPress) Posters advocating for Palestine and opposing Israel appeared in multiple locations across Pushkar, located in the Ajmer district, leading to the detention of two foreign nationals in connection with this incident.
As reported by Additional Superintendent of Police (CID) Rajesh Meena, the detained individuals were identified as British national Lewis and his companion, Aneshi, who had entered India on tourist visas.
They were issued notices to leave India due to a breach of visa regulations.
On January 21, local authorities were informed that small stickers promoting support for Palestine and opposition to Israel had been affixed at various spots in Pushkar.
With support from the district police, the CID identified the tourists involved and removed these stickers.
Officials mentioned that participating in political activities while on a tourist visa is a violation of visa rules.
Consequently, action was initiated against the two foreign nationals under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, leading to the issuance of 'Leave India' notices mandating their immediate departure from the country.
It is worth noting that Israelis frequent Pushkar, attracted by its spiritual atmosphere and vibrant culture. Recent reports have highlighted Israeli tourists engaging in rituals at Pushkar Lake, seeking peace and honoring loved ones lost in conflicts.
The town provides a sanctuary for Israeli travelers impacted by the ongoing conflict between their nation and Palestine, with establishments like the Chabad House offering community support and Jewish teachings.
The incident was flagged on January 21 when local authorities discovered the stickers displayed in several public areas. Following this, a CID team was assigned to investigate.
According to Superintendent of Police (CID) Rajesh Meena, the individuals involved were Dee (36) and Anueshi Emma Christine (36), who had also entered India on tourist visas. The investigation determined that engaging in political activities while on a tourist visa contravenes visa regulations and local sensitivities.
"Actions that show disrespect toward another nation while on Indian soil clearly violate visa rules," said Meena.
Acting under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, the CID issued notices directing the two foreign nationals to leave India without delay.
Pushkar is renowned for attracting a substantial number of international tourists, including a notable presence of Israeli visitors annually.
