New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) In a significant move towards promoting inclusive governance, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, has given the green light to a proposal that allows transgender individuals to enjoy free travel on all routes serviced by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and other department-operated buses, according to an official announcement made on Monday.
This groundbreaking decision enables eligible transgender residents of Delhi to access free transportation in DTC and cluster buses, mirroring the existing free travel provisions already available to female passengers on the city’s buses, as stated by the official.
This initiative underscores the Gupta administration's dedication to social inclusion, respect, and equal access to public services for all community members.
“Our goal is to guarantee that transgender individuals can navigate the city easily and safely without facing financial hurdles,” the statement quoted the Chief Minister.
Officials noted that this facility will follow the same operational framework as the free travel scheme currently extended to women commuters in Delhi.
CM Gupta emphasized that her government is focused on creating a more inclusive, fair, and compassionate Delhi, where every resident can access opportunities and public amenities with dignity.
This decision represents a crucial advancement by the Delhi government in enhancing social justice and facilitating inclusive urban mobility within the national capital.
Moreover, the administration has recently opened up registrations for the 'Pink Saheli Smart Card', aimed at ensuring effortless and free travel for women and girls aged 12 and older in DTC buses.
Transgender individuals will also have the opportunity to apply for the 'Pink Saheli Smart Card'.
This personalized smart card will feature the cardholder's name and photo. Besides offering free travel within the DTC and Cluster Bus network, the card will support top-up and recharge, allowing its use on other transit systems as well.
“Now, daughters, sisters, and mothers aged 12 and above can travel freely and conveniently on DTC and cluster buses,” CM Gupta stated in a previous social media post.
