Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 11 (NationPress) In a pointed political critique aimed at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gaurav Gogoi, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), on Sunday accused the BJP-led administration of deception, injustice, and a systematic erosion of democratic rights. This strong statement came as Congress hosted a significant mass induction event in preparation for the upcoming state Assembly elections.
During his address at the Manbendra Sharma Complex, Gogoi remarked that the Chief Minister's credibility has totally diminished in the eyes of the people of Assam.
"Assam cannot be governed through fear and misinformation. When the people unite, no government has the power to intimidate them. The true rulers of Assam are its citizens," he declared.
The induction event featured several key figures from opposing parties joining Congress, indicating the party's heightened readiness for the forthcoming Assembly elections.
Noteworthy among the new members were Manoj Kumar Mahanta, who departed from the BJP alongside Rajen Gohain, Rezaul Karim Sarkar, and Rukma Medok, a former state President of the Mishing Minority Council.
Additionally, the Congress bolstered its ranks with the inclusion of Kaushik Hazarika, ex-Secretary of the AGP Assam Youth Council, along with former state advisors Azizul Haque, Dilwar Husein Khan, Hasanur Zaman, and Chirajul Sarkar.
Senior leaders of Congress welcomed the newly inducted members with party symbols.
Gogoi accused the BJP of attempting to manipulate electoral rolls and suppress voter participation across various communities, including tribals, OBCs, SCs, and minorities.
He pledged that the Congress would safeguard voting rights at every polling station and block the inclusion of outsiders in electoral rolls.
In a critical remark regarding Chief Minister Sarma's handling of the Zubeen Garg case, Gogoi alleged that a flawed and compromised charge sheet was filed, accusing the state government of protecting influential figures due to political ties.
"This is a blatant case of interference in the justice system," he asserted.
In outlining Congress's broader vision, Gogoi expressed that the party aims to cultivate a united Assam by addressing regional disparities and providing lasting solutions to issues affecting minorities, land, and community.
Meanwhile, APCC Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur highlighted the growing public trust in the party, while newly joined leaders shared their motivations for joining Congress to promote community welfare and uphold democratic values.
