Patna, June 30 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure and former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, has expressed significant concerns regarding the Election Commission's decision to revise the voter list prior to the Bihar Assembly elections, claiming it is leading to confusion among the electorate.
While addressing reporters at Patna Airport, Gehlot remarked, “The Election Commission is employing new tactics right before the Bihar elections. Why the sudden need for such measures at this time?”
He challenged the necessity and transparency of updating the voter list of nearly 8 crore voters in just 25 days, highlighting that citizens are uncertain about the required documentation, such as birth certificates.
“Residents of Bihar living in Delhi are inquiring about where they can obtain birth certificates. This has resulted in widespread confusion,” he stated.
Gehlot urged the Election Commission to swiftly clarify the situation.
“This initiative is being executed without consulting the Opposition,” he added.
Previously, Krishna Allavaru, the Bihar Congress in-charge, accused the BJP of orchestrating a scheme to disenfranchise the poor, backward, and minority communities by deleting their names from the voter list prior to the elections.
“In the past, the BJP utilized covert methods to eliminate the names of minorities, economically disadvantaged, and backward caste individuals from the voter list. Now they are leveraging the Election Commission in Bihar to achieve the same objective. We vehemently oppose this action by the EC. It represents a significant plot by the BJP to hinder the participation of economically disadvantaged, Dalit, and minority voters in the electoral process leading up to the pivotal Bihar Assembly elections in 2025,” Allavaru stated.
Opposition leaders in Bihar, including Tejashwi Yadav from the RJD, have vocally condemned the Election Commission's actions since their announcement and implementation in Bihar.
On Sunday, Tejashwi Yadav raised alarms regarding the Election Commission's directive to compile a new voter list of 8 crore voters within a mere 25 days, alleging it is a plot to erase the names of economically disadvantaged, Dalit, backward, extremely backward, tribal, and minority voters from the rolls.
