Accra, July 3 (NationPress) Demonstrating their admiration for India and its vibrant culture, two members of Ghana's Parliament donned traditional Indian attire during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's momentous address at the esteemed legislative body on Thursday.
As Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, concluded PM Modi's speech, he observed two Ghanaian MPs proudly showcasing Indian attire.
One MP sported a 'pagdi' (traditional Indian headgear) along with a Bandhgala (a closed neck suit), while a female Member of Parliament stood up to reveal her stunning Indian dress, earning applause from fellow Parliament members and dignitaries, including Prime Minister Modi.
"I acknowledge that the honourable member is eager to visit India. I assure you that I will not hesitate to approve your visit... My attention has been drawn to the fact that he is not alone and has a partner... I appreciate the members for expressing their affection for India, its people, and culture," remarked Bagbin, honoring the gesture in PM Modi's presence.
Not only high-ranking Ghanaian officials but also members of the Council of State, diplomatic corps, political party representatives, independent constitutional bodies, civil society organizations, and the Indian community in Ghana were present as PM Modi addressed the Parliament.
"It is an honor to be in Ghana - a nation that embodies democracy, dignity, and resilience. As a representative of the world's largest democracy, I bring the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians. Ghana is renowned as the land of gold, not just for its natural resources but also for the warmth and strength of its people. When we look at Ghana, we see a nation that shines with courage, overcoming historical challenges with dignity and grace. Your dedication to democratic principles and inclusive growth indeed makes Ghana an inspiration for the entire African continent," stated PM Modi in his speech.
He further emphasized India's commitment to being a reliable partner in Africa's developmental journey, supporting Africa's Development Framework, Agenda 2063, to foster a bright and sustainable future.
"Africa’s aspirations are our priorities. Our strategy is to grow together as equals. Our developmental partnership with Africa is driven by demand. We focus on building local capacities and creating local opportunities. Our goal is not merely to invest, but to empower and foster self-sustaining ecosystems," added Prime Minister Modi.
Earlier that day, India time, PM Modi was awarded Ghana's national honor - Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana - by President John Dramani Mahama, acknowledging his distinguished leadership and impactful global role. Accepting the award on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, PM Modi dedicated it to the dreams of India's youth, its cultural heritage, and the historical relationship between Ghana and India.
"This honor further acknowledges his significant contributions to uplifting his nation and fostering global partnerships, including with Ghana. The award specifically recognized his distinguished leadership, substantial contributions to global development, and deep commitment to strengthening the crucial bilateral relationship between Ghana and India," stated a release from Mahama's office.
The award presentation occurred during a state banquet held in honor of the visiting Prime Minister, marking the 24th international recognition received by PM Modi from a foreign nation, highlighting his unparalleled stature. Analysts noted that no Indian Prime Minister has ever made such a profound global impact as a statesman committed to regional peace, development, and spiritual diplomacy.
The two leaders also engaged in extensive discussions in both restricted and delegation formats, agreeing to elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership.
