New Delhi, July 9 (NationPress) Former England cricketer Mark Ramprakash has commended India’s Test captain Shubman Gill for his exceptional batting technique and versatility across different formats. He believes Gill has the potential to step into the shoes of the 'Fab Four' — Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson — who have dominated the game.
Following impressive performances with scores of 147 and 8 in Leeds, Gill delivered remarkable innings of 269 and 161, leading India to a resounding 336-run victory in Birmingham. As the third Test at Lord’s approaches this Thursday, Gill has already accumulated 585 runs in the five-match series and is expected to excel at this historic venue.
"His stamina, skill, and determination are commendable – not just for amassing runs, but also for setting an example as the captain of a young team. While captaincy often impacts a player's performance negatively, it appears to have sharpened Gill’s focus, with his three highest Test scores recorded in the last three weeks," Ramprakash remarked in The Guardian on Wednesday.
Having represented England in 52 Tests from 1991 to 2002, and later as their batting coach, Ramprakash pointed out that England's choice to bowl first in the matches has allowed Gill to capitalize on early opportunities for significant runs. He urged the Ben Stokes-led team to devise new strategies to confront the in-form right-handed batsman.
"Gill was able to influence the game due to England's decision to bowl first. The chance to wear down opponents and exploit scoreboard pressure is why winning the toss and batting is crucial," he added.
"England will likely reconsider their approach as they strategize ways to minimize Gill’s impact for the remainder of the series. He is well-acquainted with the bowlers employed by England in the first two matches and understands their strategies and variations," he concluded.
Overall, Gill's relentless performance has positioned him as a formidable competitor in this series.
