Patna, July 24 (NationPress) Just a day after JD-U MP Girdhari Yadav from Banka publicly criticized the Election Commission regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, the Janata Dal (United) has issued a show-cause notice to him for making remarks that are deemed “beyond the party line.”
The notice was released on Thursday from the office of Afaque Ahmad Khan, JD-U’s National General Secretary and MLC, referencing Girdhari Yadav’s comments made within the Parliament premises.
In the notice, it is quoted: “Your views regarding the 'Special Intensive Revision' of Electoral Rolls conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) were inappropriate. You are aware that under Article 324 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the ECI has mandated this revision in Bihar.”
Additionally, it points out that opposition parties, feeling the heat of electoral defeats, are persistently trying to undermine the ECI and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The JD-U has consistently backed the ECI and the use of EVMs, both during its participation in the INDIA alliance and currently as part of the NDA.
Girdhari Yadav's comments on such a critical matter, especially in an election year, “embarrass the party” and “unintentionally lend credibility” to the opposition’s “groundless and politically motivated claims.”
The JD-U clarified that Girdhari Yadav’s behavior represents a disciplinary lapse and does not align with the Janata Dal (United)’s established stance.
“He has been given 15 days to respond to this notice, else disciplinary proceedings may follow,” states the notice.
On Wednesday, Girdhari Yadav criticized the Election Commission, labeling its decision on the SIR as a “Tughlaqi decree” and arguing that it lacks practical understanding of Bihar’s historical and geographical context.
“If the Election Commission needed to implement this, it should have done so six months ago, not during the farming and rainy season. We took ten days to gather the documents. My son is in America. How can he sign this within a month?” Yadav remarked.
While emphasizing that the party endorses the SIR, Yadav clarified he was voicing his personal opinions as an MP.
“We will align with the party on voting, but I also have my own opinions. If you deem this against the party, so be it; this is the truth. Why should we refrain from speaking the truth as MPs?” he stated.
His statements surfaced amidst growing tensions in Bihar concerning the SIR, with opposition parties accusing the ruling NDA of disenfranchisement, whereas the NDA defends the revision as a means to rectify electoral rolls.
