Patna, June 27 (NationPress) Congress National Spokesperson Pawan Khera has vehemently criticized the Narendra Modi government and the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, ahead of the Assembly elections, represents a conspiracy to disenfranchise voters and undermine democratic rights.
Khera addressed a joint press conference with RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, CPI(ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, Congress State President Rajesh Ram, and VIP leader Dev Jyoti, showcasing a united opposition front on this matter.
He characterized the voter list revision as “an open conspiracy, a robbery—not just against the voters of Bihar but against their rights, identity, and citizenship.”
Khera pointed out that the door-to-door verification process mandates voters to provide proof of their citizenship, which he claims targets the underprivileged and vulnerable populations of Bihar.
He stated that voters born before July 1, 1987, must supply valid documents to verify their date and place of birth. For those born between 1987 and December 2, 2004, valid documents of themselves and one parent are required, whereas those born after December 2, 2004, must provide documents for themselves and their parents.
Khera emphasized that these requirements are not feasible, particularly during Bihar's flood and monsoon season.
He directed pointed inquiries at the Election Commission, asking, “Why is this being implemented just before elections? How can this be finalized within a month in flood-impacted regions? If this voter list was used during the Lok Sabha elections, why can’t it be utilized now for the Assembly elections?”
In a biting critique, Khera accused the Election Commission of bias, stating: “It is evident that whenever the BJP finds itself in a predicament, they turn to the Election Commission. The Election Commission has become Modi's three monkeys: they neither hear the truth, nor see it, nor speak it.”
The Special Intensive Revision of the voter list has emerged as a contentious issue leading up to the 2025 Assembly elections, with the opposition framing it as an effort to suppress votes among the poor, minorities, and youth.
These allegations form part of a broader narrative wherein opposition parties accuse the BJP and ECI of manipulating electoral processes, while the government and ECI maintain that these measures are necessary for ensuring the accuracy of the voter list.
Khera’s statements resonate with earlier accusations from Tejashwi Yadav, creating a consolidated opposition front that seeks to portray the NDA as anti-poor and anti-democratic, setting the stage for upcoming campaign confrontations in Bihar.
