Guwahati, Nov 5 (NationPress) Rajen Gohain, a former Union Minister and a four-term MP from Nagaon, has officially joined the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), signaling a notable change in Assam's political scene on Wednesday. He vehemently criticized the state BJP leadership, branding it as a “Hitler rule”—an apparent jab at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In a statement to the press following his induction into AJP, Gohain remarked, “We had hoped that a national party like the BJP would prioritize the welfare of the Assamese people; however, I can attest that a Hitler rule prevails in the state. The entire Assamese community has been fractured due to the delimitation process.”

He further accused the BJP of engaging in corruption in Assam, alleging that the state's resources are being allocated to outsiders. Gohain commended the top leadership of the Congress, asserting, “I believe Rahul Gandhi has highlighted a crucial issue concerning vote manipulation, and there are commendable individuals within Congress. A party can flourish when good people remain.”

He emphasized that AJP should contemplate an alliance with the Congress party for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

The seasoned politician also claimed that those who tarnished Tarun Gogoi's reputation are now at the helm of the BJP in Assam.

Notably, Gohain, once a significant figure in the BJP, resigned from the party on October 9, citing “growing discontent” with its leadership and direction.

During a ceremony at the PWD Auditorium in Guwahati, Gohain joined AJP alongside several of his supporters.

Among those present were senior AJP officials, including party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, working president Chitta Basumatary, and senior leader Jagadish Bhuyan.

Welcomed into the regional party, Gohain expressed his commitment to serve the people with integrity and dedication. “Regardless of where I am, I have always endeavored to fulfill my responsibilities with honesty and devotion. I will continue this commitment here,” he affirmed.

Voicing his discontent with the BJP's current operations, Gohain stated that the party has “drifted far from the principles of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and veteran leader L.K. Advani.”

“I have been patient for an extended period, but the current state of affairs is profoundly disappointing. We did not join this party to witness personality-driven politics. It has now fallen into the hands of individuals who have little connection to the party's foundational values,” the AJP leader remarked.

Point of View

It's essential to recognize the implications of Rajen Gohain's statements on Assam's political landscape. His criticism of the BJP reflects underlying tensions within the party and highlights the need for accountability and representation in governance. The evolving dynamics between AJP and Congress could redefine Assam's political future.
