Guwahati, Oct 9 (NationPress) In a significant political shift in Assam, Rajen Gohain, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Union Minister, has officially resigned from the party. His resignation reflects his profound dissatisfaction with the party's current leadership and operations within the state. Gohain, who served as a four-time Lok Sabha MP from Nagaon and was the former Minister of State for Railways in the inaugural Modi administration, submitted his resignation at the BJP's state headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, located in Guwahati.
Speaking to the media following his resignation, Gohain expressed that he had been “patient for a long time,” but could no longer support the direction the BJP is taking in Assam. “We did not join this party to please people. We came here to uphold the principles of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani. However, the party has now come under different control,” he stated.
The seasoned politician further claimed that “only a regional party can genuinely represent the interests of Assam,” suggesting that he may soon reveal his next political steps. “BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary has become a pivotal figure in Assam's regional politics. I will make a decision shortly,” he noted.
Gohain launched a fierce critique of the current state leadership, declaring the BJP has become an “adversary of the Assamese populace.” He remarked, “I am not a selfless individual, nor do I possess the capacity to accumulate wealth like the current state BJP president Dilip Saikia. The Chief Minister disregards others and acts according to his own will.”
Having joined the BJP in 1991, Gohain represented the former Nowgong (now Nagaon) constituency for four consecutive terms from 1999 until 2014. In 2023, he resigned from his position as chairman of the Assam Food and Civil Supplies Corporation in protest against the delimitation of the Nagaon constituency, cautioning that the new boundaries would render it “unwinnable” for the BJP.
His departure signifies one of the most notable defections within the party's Assam unit, highlighting increasing internal unrest and hinting at possible political realignments as the upcoming elections approach.
