Guwahati, Feb 20 (NationPress) Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah sharply criticized the state leadership of the party on Friday, alleging significant internal strife and a collapse of unity within its ranks.
During a press interaction, Borah asserted that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has consistently held negative views toward Akhil Gogoi, the leader of Raijor Dal and MLA from Sivasagar.
“Gaurav Gogoi has never been fond of Akhil Gogoi from the outset. Despite Akhil's request for 15 seats in the upcoming assembly elections, Congress is unlikely to allocate more than two or three,” Borah claimed.
He went on to state that the Congress party in Assam has experienced a “psychological collapse,” highlighting the infighting and lack of solidarity among senior figures.
Borah pointed out that the absence of a unified vision and mutual trust has significantly diminished the party's capacity to confront the ruling BJP in the state.
Addressing Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s recent two-day visit to Assam, Borah raised concerns about the morale of party leadership.
“Did anyone notice even a hint of a smile on Priyanka Gandhi’s face while she was here?” he questioned, implying that the party's atmosphere reflects despair and uncertainty.
Borah emphasized that these issues have demoralized grassroots members and confused voters, ultimately aiding the BJP.
He asserted that rather than engaging in self-reflection and making necessary adjustments, party leaders have ignored ground realities and silenced dissenting opinions.
Borah's comments came in light of Akhil Gogoi's expressed frustration over the recent Congress-Raijor Dal meeting, particularly regarding seat-sharing for the upcoming elections.
Gogoi stated that the Congress leadership had altered its position on the seat-sharing arrangement, which he believes has generated confusion and mistrust among their alliance.
He mentioned that he would be sending a letter to Congress leaders to formally express his grievances over these developments.
“We requested only 15 seats. However, within that request, Congress changed the allocation involving crucial candidates,” Akhil Gogoi said, claiming that the decisions made were unilateral and did not embody the spirit of coalition politics.
He warned that such changes could negatively impact the shared goal of defeating the BJP, urging for an immediate finalization of the seat-sharing arrangement instead of continued delays.
“This cannot be a matter of ‘date after date’. We need a clear and prompt seat-sharing agreement,” he warned, indicating that prolonged indecision would only serve to benefit the BJP.
