'I Won't Bow Down to Congress': Akhil Gogoi Critiques Seat Sharing for Assam Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 25 (NationPress) Raijor Dal leader and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has vehemently criticized the Congress regarding the ongoing seat-sharing discussions for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, reiterating that he will not 'yield' to the party.
In a media briefing, Gogoi highlighted that the negotiations have revealed 'significant discrepancies' and a 'lack of mutual regard.'
'I refuse to submit to the Congress. I am not the type to compromise my principles for political gain. If this is the manner in which seat-sharing is approached, how can we expect any coalition to thrive?' he questioned.
The Raijor Dal chief indicated that his party initially sought 15 seats but was only presented with an offer of 13 from the Congress.
'Of the 13 seats allocated to us, we are only comfortable contesting four. The remaining seats are not acceptable. How can this be termed a coalition?' Gogoi asserted.
Emphasizing his party's electoral viability in multiple constituencies, Gogoi declared that Raijor Dal candidates hold a more advantageous position compared to Congress candidates in both Dhing and Naoboicha Assembly seats.
'In Naoboicha, we are in a robust position. The Congress lacks strong candidates in these areas,' he maintained.
Gogoi also mentioned that Raijor Dal has competent and well-liked candidates in at least 24 constituencies across Upper Assam.
'We have strong candidates throughout Upper Assam, yet the Congress refuses to acknowledge this reality,' he alleged.
Addressing the issue of minority representation, the Raijor Dal MLA stated that his party had requested five minority-dominated seats, but was only allocated one.
'We asked for five minority seats, yet received merely one. This clearly illustrates the Congress' treatment of its allies,' Gogoi stated.
He cautioned that alliances cannot function based solely on unilateral decisions and stressed that respect, transparency, and political integrity are vital for any partnership.
'An alliance cannot be established through imposition. There must be dignity and equality between partners,' he emphasized.
These pointed comments arise amidst ongoing negotiations among opposition factions in Assam striving to form a united front against the BJP in the lead-up to the Assembly elections.
