Is Opposition Unity in Assam at Risk? Akhil Gogoi Criticizes Congress
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 20 (NationPress) The leader of the regional political party Raijor Dal and Sivasagar legislator Akhil Gogoi expressed significant discontent regarding the results of the latest discussions between the Congress and Raijor Dal, particularly concerning the matter of seat-sharing for the forthcoming elections in Assam.
In his remarks to the media, Gogoi indicated that the Congress party's leadership had altered its position on the seat-sharing framework, which he believes has generated confusion and a lack of trust among coalition members.
Gogoi mentioned that he plans to send a formal letter to the Congress leadership to articulate his grievances about the recent developments.
"We have requested only 15 seats. Yet, even within that request, the Congress has shifted crucial candidates' seats," stated Akhil Gogoi, claiming that the decisions made were unilateral and did not embody the essence of alliance politics.
He further warned that such alterations could negatively impact the unified goal of defeating the BJP.
The Raijor Dal chief emphasized that both clarity and mutual respect are vital for any opposition coalition to operate effectively.
He pointed out that ongoing delays and changing positions from the Congress are diminishing the morale of grassroots activists and perplexing voters.
Akhil Gogoi insisted that the seat-sharing agreement must be finalized immediately rather than being postponed repeatedly.
"This cannot be a case of 'date after date.' An immediate and definitive seat-sharing agreement is essential," he cautioned, noting that prolonged uncertainty would only aid the BJP.
Similarly, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), issued a warning to the Congress. He stated that if Congress is earnest about defeating the BJP in Assam, it needs to acknowledge ground realities and respect its allies' concerns.
"The Congress must understand that unity and prompt decisions are critical in confronting the BJP. Any delays or lack of cooperation will weaken the opposition's efforts," cautioned Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
These developments emerge amid ongoing talks among opposition factions in Assam to create a united front against the ruling BJP. However, ongoing disagreements over seat-sharing and cooperation continue to pose hurdles, raising doubts about the unity of the proposed alliance ahead of the elections.
