What Fresh Uncertainty is Surrounding Opposition Unity in Assam?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 19 (NationPress) Recent developments in Assam's opposition unity efforts have brought about new uncertainty on Thursday. The two major regional parties, Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), convened a private meeting in Guwahati, deliberately excluding the Congress from seat-sharing discussions ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
The meeting included Raijor Dal leader and MLA Akhil Gogoi, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, along with senior officials from both parties. Also present were representatives from the CPI and CPI(M), indicating a collective effort from various non-Congress opposition factions to seek a wider coordination framework.
According to sources, the main focus of the meeting was the seat-sharing strategy and the future of opposition unity following the resignation of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Bora, which has introduced further uncertainty within the opposition.
After the meeting, Akhil Gogoi issued a two-day ultimatum to the Congress, demanding a clear stance on seat-sharing. He stated that Raijor Dal is aiming for 15 Assembly constituencies as part of any potential alliance with the Congress.
“If the Congress is genuinely committed to opposition unity, it must provide clarity within the next two days. We cannot afford to wait indefinitely,” Gogoi remarked.
He also emphasized that his party is fully equipped to contest the elections independently if an agreement is not reached.
“Raijor Dal is prepared to fight alone in 46 constituencies if necessary,” he added.
However, leaders at the meeting maintained that the opportunity for a broader opposition unity remains open. They indicated that discussions are ongoing and further talks may occur based on the Congress party’s reaction.
Political analysts think the Congress’s exclusion from the meeting highlights increasing distrust among opposition parties, especially following leadership changes within the state Congress unit.
As the Assembly elections draw near and the ruling BJP intensifies its preparations, the lack of clarity on seat-sharing and leadership among opposition parties may notably affect their electoral outcomes.
The forthcoming days are anticipated to be pivotal in deciding whether a unified opposition front will materialize in Assam or if individual parties will venture into the electoral fray.
