Assam Congress Plans Three-Day Review Meeting to Analyze Bypoll Losses

Guwahati, Dec 11 (NationPress) Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah stated on Wednesday that the party is set to hold a three-day meeting to evaluate its poor performance in the state by-elections.

He informed reporters, "From December 13 to 15, we will engage in a thorough discussion in Guwahati where the officer bearers from both block and district levels will participate. We will gather on-ground insights regarding the losses incurred in the by-elections for five seats. Once our review meeting concludes, I will be able to clarify what went awry."

Borah remarked, "The party has initiated preparations for the Panchayat elections. We will strive to nominate candidates who possess a positive public image."

He added, "Congress is consistently in favor of uniting all opposition forces to challenge the BJP. However, with the Panchayat polls approaching, we can deliberate on that matter post-elections. Other opposition leaders, such as Akhil Gogoi, are likely preoccupied with their constituencies in preparation for the Panchayat elections."

Previously, Akhil Gogoi, the Sivasagar MLA, indicated that an alliance with the Congress could only materialize if a seat-sharing arrangement was agreed upon before the elections.

"Congress must determine how many seats they are willing to contest. They often leave these decisions unresolved until the election dates are announced, and at the last moment, they reveal their candidates for most constituencies," Gogoi stated.

According to Gogoi, in order to oust the BJP from power, all opposition parties, including Congress, must unite for a collective fight. This is deemed the only viable strategy to defeat the ruling party in the upcoming Assembly elections.

The Sivasagar legislator further cautioned that the Congress would likely perform poorly if it chooses to contest the Assembly elections independently.

"In the 2021 Assembly election, Congress secured 26 seats, but if they run solo in the next elections, they may only manage to win around six seats," he predicted.

Congress failed to win any of the five seats they contested in the recent by-elections.
