Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced the formation of an election committee on Tuesday, aimed at strategizing for the upcoming assembly elections in Assam.
The committee, comprising a minimum of 35 members, features key figures from the opposition party, including Assam state president Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Debabrata Saikia, and two Lok Sabha MPs—Rakibul Hussain and Pradyut Bordoloi. Also included are former state chiefs Bhupen Borah and Ripun Borah, former minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, among others.
This committee is anticipated to play a crucial role in making decisions about potential alliances with regional parties such as Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal and other significant political players in the state. Furthermore, it will oversee ticket distribution for the forthcoming assembly elections.
Recently, Akhil Gogoi, president of Raijor Dal and MLA from Sivasagar, stated that opposition parties in Assam are collaborating to establish a united front against the BJP as the next assembly elections approach, with Gaurav Gogoi being favored as the Chief Ministerial candidate.
A pivotal meeting involving opposition leaders took place at Orchid Park in Golaghat on Sunday. After arriving in Guwahati, Akhil Gogoi disclosed that discussions included representatives from seven parties, all focused on enhancing coordination for the electoral contest.
“We firmly believe that this time, Gaurav Gogoi should ascend as the Chief Minister of Assam. Seven parties will unite to challenge the BJP,” Gogoi remarked, noting that the Congress leader had tentatively agreed.
He indicated that while all parties largely concurred on the need for opposition unity, negotiations regarding seat-sharing are still in progress.
“Today, we couldn't finalize the complete seat distribution, but discussions were highly fruitful. We are only requesting fifteen seats. Despite having the organizational strength to contest more across Upper Assam, Lower Assam, and other areas, we are willing to restrict ourselves to fifteen for the sake of unity,” he stated.
Pointing fingers at the BJP-led government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Akhil Gogoi asserted that the opposition's campaign would focus on displacing the current administration.
He accused the Chief Minister of making divisive comments to remain in the public eye, asserting that the opposition aims to unite people from all communities in Assam.
“Our battle is against corruption and what we perceive as communal politics. We shall persist in this fight,” he concluded.
