Bhupen Borah: Congress Aims to Consolidate Regional Forces in Assam

New Delhi/Guwahati, Dec 6 (NationPress) The president of Assam Congress, Bhupen Borah, stated on Friday that the historic party is dedicated to unifying all regional forces prior to the upcoming Assembly elections, scheduled for 2026 in the state.
He also indicated that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has approved this initiative.
Borah was in the national capital to confer with senior Congress officials and he presented a report concerning the party's recent setbacks in the state during the by-elections.
In a statement to the media, he said: "I have provided a comprehensive report explaining the reasons for our electoral loss in Assam. Additionally, I had discussions with Rahul Gandhi and other prominent party leaders. They advised me to pursue a broader opposition coalition in Assam to challenge the BJP in the forthcoming assembly elections."
"The Congress has always supported the idea of opposition unity, and our leader Rahul Gandhi has encouraged me to strive for the consolidation of all regional parties in Assam," he added.
Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi, the MLA from Sivasagar, previously stated that a partnership with the Congress would only be possible if a seat-sharing agreement is finalized well before the elections.
"The Congress needs to determine how many seats they intend to contest. They tend to leave these decisions pending until the election announcements are made, and at the last moment, they assign their candidates to the majority of the seats," he remarked.
According to Gogoi, to remove the BJP from power, all opposition factions, including the Congress, must unite. This is the sole strategy to defeat the ruling party in the next assembly elections.
The Sivasagar legislator also cautioned that the Congress would struggle significantly if it chose to contest the Assembly elections independently.
"In the previous 2021 Assembly election, the Congress secured 26 seats, but if they run solo in the next elections, they may only manage to win about 6 seats," he warned.
Despite contesting all five seats in the recent by-elections, Congress ended up without any wins.
The opposition party experienced a significant loss in the Samaguri assembly constituency, where Congress stalwart and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain's son, Tanzil Hussain, was defeated by the BJP's Diplu Ranjan Sarmah.
