Does Gaurav Gogoi Have a Dislike for Akhil Gogoi, As Alleged by Bhupen Borah?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 20 (NationPress) Former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah sharply criticized the party's state leadership on Friday, claiming there is significant internal conflict and a lack of unity within the organization.
In a statement to the media, Borah asserted that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has consistently had issues with Akhil Gogoi, the leader of Raijor Dal and MLA from Sivasagar.
“From the outset, Gaurav Gogoi has shown disdain towards Akhil Gogoi. Even though Akhil has been requesting 15 seats for the upcoming assembly elections, it is unlikely that Congress can offer more than two to three,” Borah stated.
He further remarked that the Congress party in Assam has undergone a “psychological collapse,” highlighting the infighting and disunity among senior officials.
Borah emphasized that the lack of a shared vision and mutual trust has diminished the party’s capacity to effectively oppose the ruling BJP in the state.
During Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s recent two-day visit to Assam, Borah questioned the morale of the party's leadership.
“Did anyone notice a smile on Priyanka Gandhi's face while she was in Assam?” he asked, implying that the party’s atmosphere was filled with despair and uncertainty.
According to him, such situations have demoralized grassroots workers and created confusion among voters, ultimately playing into the hands of the BJP.
Borah criticized the leadership for overlooking ground realities and suppressing dissent instead of engaging in self-reflection and making necessary adjustments.
His comments come as Akhil Gogoi expressed strong discontent regarding the results of the recent discussions between Congress and Raijor Dal, especially concerning seat-sharing for the upcoming elections.
Akhil Gogoi noted that the Congress leadership had altered its position regarding the seat-sharing agreement, which he believes has led to confusion and distrust among alliance partners.
He mentioned that he would send a formal letter to the Congress leadership to express his dissatisfaction with the situation.
“We have only requested 15 seats. However, within that request, Congress has modified the seats involving crucial candidates,” Akhil Gogoi stated, accusing the decisions of being unilateral and not in line with the spirit of coalition politics.
He cautioned that such alterations could negatively impact their collective goal of defeating the BJP. Akhil Gogoi insisted that the seat-sharing arrangement must be finalized promptly to avoid further delays.
“This cannot be postponed indefinitely. A clear and immediate seat-sharing agreement is essential,” he warned, emphasizing that prolonged indecision would only benefit the BJP.
