Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 1 (NationPress) The President of Raijor Dal and Sivasagar MLA in Assam, Akhil Gogoi, announced on Sunday that the opposition factions in the state are striving to establish a cohesive alliance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections, with Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi being highlighted as the favored candidate for Chief Minister.
A pivotal meeting of opposition leaders transpired earlier today at Orchid Park in Golaghat.
Upon arriving in Guwahati, Akhil Gogoi remarked that seven political parties participated in the discussions aimed at enhancing collaboration for the impending electoral contest.
"During today’s gathering, we explicitly stated that this time Gaurav Gogoi should be appointed as the Chief Minister of Assam. Seven parties will unite against the BJP," he said, further noting that the Congress leader had agreed in principle.
He emphasized that all political factions were largely aligned on the matter of opposition unity, although seat-sharing arrangements are still under negotiation.
"The comprehensive seat distribution could not be finalized today, but discussions were highly optimistic. We are requesting only 15 Assembly seats. Although we possess the organizational capacity to contest more across Upper Assam, Lower Assam, and other areas, we are prepared to limit ourselves to 15 for the sake of unity," he added.
In targeting the BJP-led state government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Akhil Gogoi asserted that the opposition’s campaign would focus on unseating the current BJP administration.
He accused the Chief Minister of making divisive statements to retain public attention and claimed that the opposition would strive to unite people from all communities in Assam.
"Our struggle is against corruption and what we perceive as communal politics. We will persist in this fight," he concluded.
These developments indicate escalating efforts among opposition parties in Assam to consolidate ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, which are projected to be a significant political contest in the northeastern state.
