Akhil Gogoi Claims BJP and Congress MLAs to Transition to Raijar Dal

Guwahati, Dec 4 (NationPress) The MLA of Sivasagar and leader of the regional party Raijar Dal in Assam, Akhil Gogoi, stated on Tuesday that a minimum of two MLAs from the BJP are preparing to join his party.
The opposition figure also mentioned that several leaders from the Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) are expected to align with the Raijar Dal.
“Two BJP MLAs have been in conversation with us regarding their party-switch, and they will be joining the Raijar Dal. Additionally, a few legislators from other parties, including Congress and AIUDF, are also set to join us. However, this will only happen within six months prior to the Assembly elections in Assam to avert any by-election scenarios,” Gogoi informed the media.
The upcoming Assembly elections in Assam are scheduled for April 2026.
The Sivasagar MLA further elaborated that a coalition with Congress is only feasible if a seat-sharing agreement is finalized well ahead of the elections.
“Congress needs to determine how many seats they wish to contest. They often delay these discussions until the election dates are declared, and at the last moment, they present their candidates for most constituencies,” he remarked.
Earlier on Tuesday, Akhil Gogoi stated, “To remove the BJP from governance, all opposition factions, including Congress, must unite. This is the sole method to overcome the ruling party in the forthcoming assembly elections.”
He also cautioned that the Congress party would likely face a poor performance if they opted to run solo in the Assembly elections.
“During the 2021 Assembly elections, Congress secured 26 seats; however, if they contest independently, they may only win around 6 seats in the upcoming elections,” he warned.
In response, Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora remarked, “Congress has consistently supported the idea of contesting elections with all regional forces united, but Akhil Gogoi needs to refrain from criticizing us. Such behavior is not conducive to a healthy alliance.”
Congress faced defeats in the recent bypolls, failing to win any of the five contested seats. The party lost its stronghold in the Samaguri Assembly constituency, with Congress heavyweight and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain’s son, Tanzil Hussain, conceding defeat to BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah.
