Akhil Gogoi Announces BJP and Congress MLAs Set to Join Raijor Dal

Guwahati, Dec 4 (NationPress) The Sivasagar MLA and the leader of the regional party Raijor Dal in Assam, Akhil Gogoi, revealed on Tuesday that at least two BJP MLAs are considering joining his party.
The opposition figure further indicated that several leaders from Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) are also poised to join Raijor Dal.
“Two BJP MLAs have been in discussions with us about making a switch, and they will be joining Raijor Dal. Furthermore, some legislators from other parties such as Congress and AIUDF are also set to join our party. However, they will only do so six months prior to the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam to avoid triggering any by-elections,” Gogoi informed the press.
The next Assembly elections in Assam are scheduled for April 2026.
The Sivasagar representative also pointed out that any alliance with Congress must include a seat-sharing agreement finalized well ahead of the elections.
“Congress needs to determine how many seats they intend to contest. They often delay these decisions until the election dates are announced, leaving it to the last moment to decide their candidates,” he stated.
Earlier on Tuesday, Akhil Gogoi stated, “To remove the BJP from power, all opposition parties, including Congress, must unite. This is the only viable strategy to defeat the ruling party in the next Assembly elections.”
The Sivasagar MLA also cautioned that Congress would perform poorly if they opted to run alone in the Assembly elections.
“In the 2021 Assembly elections, Congress secured 26 seats, but if they contest independently, they may only manage to win about 6 seats in the upcoming elections,” he predicted.
Meanwhile, the Assam Congress president, Bhupen Bora, remarked, “Congress has always supported fighting elections in collaboration with all regional forces, but Akhil Gogoi should cease his criticisms of us. This is not conducive for a healthy alliance.”
Despite contesting all five seats in the by-elections, Congress did not win any seats. They lost their stronghold in the Samaguri Assembly constituency, where Congress heavyweight and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain's son, Tanzil Hussain, suffered defeat against the BJP's Diplu Ranjan Sarmah.
