Akhil Gogoi Signals Political Shift in Assam Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, April 9 (NationPress) As the state of Assam held elections for its 126-seat Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Akhil Gogoi, the president of Raijor Dal, conveyed a strong sense of optimism regarding a potential political overhaul in Assam, claiming that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to be ousted.
In a statement to the press, Gogoi noted a clear shift in public sentiment against the current administration, pointing to a growing dissatisfaction among voters. “There is an undeniable mood for change sweeping through Assam. The electorate is dissatisfied with the BJP's governance and is determined to usher in a new government. I firmly believe that the BJP will be voted out, paving the way for the opposition to take charge,” he remarked.
As the candidate for the Sivasagar constituency, Gogoi expressed confidence in his electoral prospects, predicting a significant victory margin. “I expect to win in Sivasagar by over 50,000 votes. The people's desire for change is evident in both the voter turnout and their enthusiasm,” he added.
Gogoi also commended the electorate for their active involvement in the democratic process, praising them for coming out in large numbers to vote.
In light of a reported violent incident on the eve of the elections, Gogoi alleged that the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) in Assam, Bidyut Saikia, was attacked in Sivasagar on Wednesday.
He mentioned that Saikia is currently receiving treatment at Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital.
Although details about the incident remain scarce, Gogoi urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to promote calm amidst rising tensions. “I urge the Chief Minister to maintain calm. Political transitions can lead to unrest, and this time will be no different; there will be a change in government,” he stated.
Reflecting on his political journey, Gogoi characterized himself as one of Assam's most proactive legislators.
He also made grave allegations against his opponent, suggesting that the rival candidate in Sivasagar has a criminal background, although no official confirmation has been provided regarding this claim.
The Raijor Dal has entered into a seat-sharing arrangement with the Congress party, which has allocated 11 constituencies to them. However, the coalition partners are also engaged in a friendly contest in two of these seats.
