New Delhi, July 4 (NationPress) The Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, on Friday drew attention to the similarities between esports and traditional sports, asserting that both require discipline, mental resilience, and teamwork.
“Esports is motivating India’s youth to thrive in a fast-changing digital landscape,” she remarked during the Grand Finals of the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series (BMPS) 2025 held at the Yashobhoomi, India International Convention and Expo Centre, Dwarka.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is dedicated to establishing world-class infrastructure, promoting career opportunities, and ensuring that Indian talent shines globally,” Khadse stated.
Her presence at the launch of the three-day tournament, which runs from July 4 to 6, featuring 16 of India’s premier BGMI professional teams vying for a prize pool of Rs 4 crore, highlights the government’s increasing recognition of esports as a legitimate sporting arena, according to an official announcement.
In December 2022, the government officially acknowledged esports when a Presidential Gazette Notification placed competitive gaming under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
In February 2025, the Ministry expanded its cash-incentive scheme, previously available only to Olympic and Commonwealth medalists, to encompass esports athletes and their coaches.
The regulatory framework is currently a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, which aligns the policy frameworks for both sports and digital governance.
This organized strategy is crucial as Indian esports athletes aim for esteemed international competitions such as the upcoming Olympic Esports Games 2027 in Saudi Arabia, the statement added.
Participation among youth in esports has surged significantly in recent years. Multiple reports indicate that millions of Indian youngsters are engaging in esports in various roles. This trend underscores the swift mainstream acceptance of esports among India’s younger demographics.
The BMPS 2025 Grand Finals mark a pivotal occasion for Indian esports, showcasing local talent and fostering industry collaboration.
The tournament serves as a vital platform for professional players to demonstrate their abilities, connect with an enthusiastic audience, and contribute to the swiftly evolving competitive gaming scene in India.
