Ahmedabad Crime Branch uses DNA to crack 35-year-old murder case from 1992
Ahmedabad Crime Branch has unearthed human skeletal remains from a residential property in Vatva's Qutub Nagar area, potentially cracking a 35-year-old homicide dating back to 1992. Investigators are now awaiting DNA confirmation to establish whether the remains belong to a woman named Farzana alias Shabnam, who went missing from Ahmedabad decades ago.
The Excavation Operation
The skeletal remains were exhumed on Wednesday from a pit nearly 18 feet below the floor of a residential property in Vatva. The operation was conducted with an executive magistrate, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) officials, and labour teams deploying a JCB machine. Police said the excavation was initiated after credible intelligence suggested that a woman had been murdered and buried inside the premises decades earlier.
Who Was Farzana Alias Shabnam
According to investigators, Farzana alias Shabnam, originally from Dholka, was approximately 17 to 18 years old when she went missing. Officials said she had been married young in Surat, returned to her parental home shortly thereafter, and subsequently moved to Ahmedabad. She reportedly became estranged from her family and was living independently in the city when she came into contact with a man identified in police records as Shamshuddin, whom she later married.
What Investigators Allege
Police allege that disputes arose after Farzana reportedly continued to engage in prostitution, which led to tensions between the couple. ACP Bharat Patel stated that four individuals have been identified as being involved in the alleged offence.
