Gujarat ATS Captures Key Figure in Major Heroin and Arms Smuggling Ring
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has successfully apprehended a suspect linked to a notorious heroin and arms trafficking operation in Punjab, officials revealed on Thursday.
The individual, named Rehmat Ali Sheikh, was arrested at an embroidery factory located in the Rakhial district of Ahmedabad.
According to police reports, Sheikh is wanted for his role in smuggling heroin, hand grenades, and firearms across the Pakistan-Punjab border, with a case filed against him at the Raja Sansi police station in Amritsar.
Prior to Sheikh's capture in Gujarat, two accomplices had been taken into custody by Punjab Police, who managed to confiscate a staggering 42.9 kg of heroin, alongside four hand grenades, a Star-mark pistol, and 46 live cartridges.
ATS officials disclosed that Sheikh had evaded law enforcement in Punjab since the registration of the case on January 29. Intelligence reports suggested that he had traversed through Nepal and Bihar before settling in Ahmedabad, where he was employed in the embroidery factory to mask his identity.
“After receiving a credible tip-off, our team executed a strategic search operation in the Rakhial area, leading to the successful capture of Sheikh. He is currently at our headquarters, where further interrogation is being conducted,” stated an official.
During preliminary questioning, Sheikh admitted to being part of a broader narcotics and arms smuggling syndicate.
He allegedly played a key role in facilitating the transportation of heroin, hand grenades, and firearms from the Pakistan side of the Punjab border to his associates within the state last month.
The investigations are delving into potential violations of sections 21 and 25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) as well as sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
Officials from the Gujarat ATS have informed Punjab Police about Sheikh’s detention, and legal proceedings are underway to transfer him for further investigation.
Authorities are also probing whether Sheikh had any local accomplices while he was in Ahmedabad.
The ATS emphasized that this operation underscores the collaborative efforts of state police forces in combating organized drug trafficking and illicit arms smuggling networks that transcend both state and international boundaries.
Sheikh’s arrest is part of the ongoing efforts by the Gujarat ATS in inter-state and cross-border counter-terrorism initiatives, which include a notable case from November 2025 involving the apprehension of individuals linked to arms smuggling associated with Pakistan-based terrorist organizations.
