Gandhinagar, Sep 11 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, paid tribute on Thursday to nine brave forest martyrs from the state who sacrificed their lives in the noble pursuit of protecting and conserving forests and wildlife.
In observance of National Forest Martyrs Day, CM Patel laid floral offerings at the inaugural 'Vanpal Memorial', situated at the Van Chetna Kendra in Sector 30, Gandhinagar.
This significant day has been recognized nationwide on September 11 every year since 2013, following the central government's initiative to honor forest rangers, guards, range officers, and frontline staff who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Joined by State Forest Minister Mulubhai Bera and Minister of State Mukesh Patel, the Chief Minister observed a two-minute silence to commemorate the fallen heroes.
Also present to pay their respects were Legislator Ritaben Patel, Additional Chief Secretary (Forest and Environment) Sanjeev Kumar, Head of Forest Force A.P. Singh, along with other senior forest officials.
Gujarat has made substantial budgetary commitments towards wildlife and forest conservation. In the state budget for 2025-26, Rs 40 crore has been earmarked specifically to prevent lion fatalities along railway tracks and enhance wildlife protection through a command-and-control unit.
Moreover, the Forest Department has been allocated Rs 655 crore for the development and promotion of forest areas, utilizing innovative methods such as Miyawaki plantation, and Rs 10 crore for its coastal 'green wall' program (Mishti).
On lion conservation, the state government invested Rs 277.93 crore during 2022-23 in the Gir and Greater Gir regions.
This funding was utilized for hiring veterinarians, deploying ambulances in forested areas, operating rapid-action rescue teams, establishing disease-treatment centers, and other protective infrastructure. On a national scale, the Union Government initiated the Project Lion, with an approved budget of approximately Rs 2,927.71 crore.
This initiative aims to bolster wildlife health, manage habitats, and mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, while also establishing a National Wildlife Disease Diagnostic and Referral Centre in Junagadh.
From 2016-2021, out of the total expenditure by Gujarat's forest force wings, roughly Rs 823 crore was specifically allocated for the protection, conservation, and management of wildlife sanctuaries, amounting to nearly 13.7 percent of their total activities during that time, as reported by officials.
