Gujarat launches 40+ AI use cases across 14 departments on National Technology Day
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gujarat has identified and initiated more than 40 artificial intelligence (AI) use cases across over 14 government departments — spanning agriculture, healthcare, urban development, energy, and governance — as the state accelerates its push to embed AI-driven systems in public administration and citizen services. The details were released by the state government on National Technology Day, 11 May 2025, from Gandhinagar.
Gujarat Future Technology Initiatives
At the centre of the state's AI strategy is the Gujarat Future Technology Initiatives (GFTI) programme, designed to ensure coordinated AI adoption across departments. To support implementation, the government has established institutional mechanisms including an AI Taskforce, an AI Implementation Cell, and a structured AI Action Plan. Officials described the state's approach as "technology-based good governance" with "government departments being equipped with AI."
The state has also set up the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO), a Section 8 entity created for advanced AI research and innovation, aimed at strengthening Gujarat's AI research and development capabilities.
AI Centre of Excellence and Industry Engagement
The AI Centre of Excellence, established in 2025 in collaboration with NASSCOM and Microsoft, has emerged as a key pillar of the state's technology development ecosystem. In its first year alone, the centre recorded more than 1,400 industry engagements, trained over 350 government officials in AI and emerging technologies, supported more than 100 startup solutions, and connected with over 300 global delegates. Implementation processes for 21 AI use cases across 14 departments have already begun.
GPU Infrastructure and Computing Access
Under the India AI Mission, Gujarat has operationalised 16 GPU centres and is working towards installing more than 100 GPUs across the state. A GPU-as-a-Service platform with real-time usage tracking has been launched to provide scalable computing access to government departments, startups, and educational institutions — a move that officials say positions Gujarat as a leading node in India's national AI computing grid.
Sector-Wise AI Applications
Gujarat Informatics Limited (GIL) has developed a suite of AI-based tools targeting administrative efficiency and public services. These include a Document Extractor, Grievance Classifier, AI-based chatbot, GSAAR AI-based archival system, a Gujarati language model, LLM and NLP dashboards, a scheme eligibility checker for citizens, and the Gujarati grammar assistant "Bhasha Setu".
In agriculture, AI applications are being explored for crop disease diagnosis, smart irrigation, and grain quality analysis. Healthcare use cases include AI-assisted diagnosis, chronic disease detection, and lung cancer screening. In urban development, AI systems are being deployed for smart mobility, CCTV analytics, and blueprint automation, while the energy sector is using AI for electricity theft detection and consumption analysis.
Political Context and Road Ahead
Officials credited the progress to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia. National Technology Day is observed annually on 11 May to commemorate India's successful nuclear tests under Operation Shakti in 1998 and the maiden flight of the indigenously developed Hans-3 aircraft. The day was declared by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Gujarat has indicated it will continue expanding AI and digital transformation initiatives in the coming years to consolidate its position in technology-driven governance.
