Gandhinagar, July 18 (NationPress) Gujarat has emerged as a pioneer in leveraging technology for streamlining judicial processes, according to a recent report.
Through effective collaboration among police, correctional facilities, and the judiciary, the state administration has made it possible to present prisoners in court via video conferencing, significantly simplifying the procedure.
This innovative method has resulted in remarkable advancements in the presentation of numerous inmates from state prisons to the courts using the video conferencing (VC) system, thereby conserving manpower, time, and resources within the police force.
The initiative to produce prisoners in court through video conferencing gained momentum following a 2022 decision to establish approximately 1,100 video conferencing units throughout the courts.
Of these, 23 software-based VC systems were dedicated exclusively to correctional facilities. Currently, 83 video conferencing systems are operational in jails across Gujarat.
Data from the Gujarat Prisons Department indicates that this system has yielded positive outcomes. Between January and June 2024, 40,633 prisoners (29 percent) were presented before the courts via video conferencing across all jails under the department's oversight.
This figure rose to 53,672 prisoners (41 percent) during the same timeframe in 2025, showcasing the increasing adoption and success of the system. The effective deployment of this system has conserved manpower, time, and resources for the police.
Furthermore, it has facilitated the reassignment of personnel previously engaged in custody duties, enhancing overall departmental efficiency. This system has been instrumental in expediting the judicial process, ensuring timely justice for victims and appropriate penalties for offenders.
As Gujarat takes the lead in utilizing video conferencing for court appearances, it underscores the state government's dedication to fortifying the judiciary through technological advancements.
