Seoul, March 24 (NationPress) South Korean Acting President, Han Duck-soo, declared on Monday his unwavering commitment to tackle critical issues after his reinstatement, expressing gratitude for the Constitutional Court's decision that annulled his impeachment.
Han made this statement upon his return to the office, 87 days after the National Assembly voted to impeach him due to his alleged involvement in suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law on December 3, among other factors.
"As the Acting President, I pledge to exert my utmost efforts to ensure stable governance per the Constitution and the law," Han stated during a national address.
"I will invest all my wisdom and capabilities to safeguard our national interests amid the ongoing trade war that has become a reality," he noted, referencing the evolving economic and geopolitical situations following US President Donald Trump's inauguration, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
He also emphasized the need for national unity as the country remains divided over Yoon's impeachment, with a ruling on this significant case anticipated soon.
"The vast majority of the populace I have served for nearly 50 years did not desire the country to shift to the left or the right. They simply aimed for it to progress and advance," said the experienced technocrat skilled in trade and diplomacy.
Upon his reinstatement, Han was briefed on the wildfire relief efforts and instructed relevant authorities to exert maximum effort to combat wildfires that have plagued the nation since Friday.
He also directed the defense ministry to enhance military preparedness and the foreign ministry to intensify diplomatic initiatives to bolster cooperation with the United States and other allied nations amid global uncertainties.
To mitigate rising concerns over social unrest due to prolonged political instability, Han urged police to maintain heightened vigilance at public demonstrations and to take "stern measures" against illegal activities.
