Is Hazlewood Set to Propel RCB in IPL 2025 Playoffs?

New Delhi, May 25 (NationPress) Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has made a comeback to the squad following his recovery from a shoulder injury, just in time for their final league match and the IPL 2025 playoffs.

Hazlewood, who has been RCB’s top wicket-taker this season with 18 wickets in only 10 games, had been sidelined since April 27. He returned to Australia during the brief suspension of the IPL, which was prompted by cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

After completing his rehabilitation at home, he resumed training in Brisbane as part of Australia’s preparations for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. Following successful training sessions, he is now back with the RCB squad.

RCB has already secured a spot in the playoffs but faced a setback in their pursuit of a top-two finish after suffering a narrow defeat in a high-scoring match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday. Hazlewood’s return is crucial, as achieving a top-two position would provide them with two opportunities to reach the final.

Former Indian coach Anil Kumble emphasized the advantage RCB gains with Hazlewood’s presence.

"The positive aspect for RCB is that they will play their last game knowing exactly their standing and what is required," he mentioned during an appearance on ESPNcricinfo's Time Out.

Despite his recent absence, Hazlewood ranks as the fourth-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2025, boasting 18 wickets at an average of 17.27 and an economy rate of 8.44, highlighting his significance in various phases of the game. Following him for RCB are left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya with 15 wickets and pacer Yash Dayal with 10.

During Hazlewood's absence, Lungi Ngidi was given a chance but was unable to match the Australian’s impact. Ngidi will now miss the playoffs due to international commitments with South Africa. While Nuwan Thushara has yet to play this season, Blessing Muzarabani has been signed as a replacement, but his lack of experience at this level makes Hazlewood’s return even more critical.

This IPL season signifies Hazlewood’s return after a challenging home summer filled with injuries, including a calf strain and a side issue, which kept him from participating in several key matches. These injuries had also sidelined him from the third Test against India, the tour of Sri Lanka, and the Champions Trophy. However, he now stands a strong chance of playing in the WTC final, likely replacing Scott Boland after narrowly missing the 2023 final against India due to injury.
