New Delhi, Oct 9 (NationPress) Former Australian cricketer Ian Healy has cautioned selectors against jeopardizing skipper Pat Cummins during his recovery from a stress fracture in his spine. The Australians are gearing up to confront England in the prestigious Ashes series commencing November 21.
The potential absence of Pat Cummins for the entire Ashes series underscores Australia's lack of depth in fast bowlers ready to fill the gap.
The effectiveness of the bowling trio comprising Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood over the past decade, along with Scott Boland's inclusion since 2021, has resulted in a deficiency of experience among emerging fast bowlers. This situation presents selectors with a range of options for November, but most are lacking in international exposure.
Expressing his views on the matter, Healy stated on SENQ Breakfast, “He will be a significant loss, but we must not risk Pat Cummins at all. He is a steady and incredibly reliable performer. He is our mainstay when needed and consistently delivers results. He is patient, composed, and an inspiring leader. Scott Boland will likely be the first choice, but in case of an injury, who else do we have?”
“Michael Neser is a contender for any Test match. I would love to see him play. Then we have engaged teammates who share bonds over a beer or a glass of wine. Starc is a wicket-taker, Nathan Lyon is a solid performer, and Hazlewood never lets up. They can manage without Cummins.”
At 35, Neser is among the options Healy mentioned, including younger players. “If Neser is our best option, let’s bring him in. He’s our top choice. Next is Fergus O'Neill, who took 38 wickets last season in the Sheffield Shield. He is a fierce competitor. Following him, we have Xavier Bartlett – a promising talent being tested at various levels, including Australia A, one-dayers, and four-day matches, and performing admirably,” he noted.
“Then we have Jordan Buckingham and Brendan Doggett. It's clear our depth is limited, but there are young players emerging. Although the depth will grow as we have relied on these four bowlers for a decade, a whole generation of talent has been overlooked. With these youngsters, we must ensure they gain as much experience as possible, but they are more susceptible to injuries and may need to step up significantly,” he concluded.
