Chennai, March 9 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecasted significant rainfall across various districts of Tamil Nadu for a duration of four days commencing from March 10.

The districts likely to be impacted include Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram.

In light of this forecast, the state administration is contemplating declaring holidays for educational institutions in these districts starting March 10.

Officials have advised residents to take appropriate precautions and remain indoors during the periods of heavy rainfall.

Authorities will be actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

Citizens are encouraged to stay updated through local news outlets and weather notifications. While some regions of Tamil Nadu prepare for heavy rains, coastal and inland areas are facing extreme heat.

Chennai and its neighboring areas have already witnessed the hottest day of the season. The RMC has cautioned that the maximum temperature in specific regions may increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the upcoming days.

During the northeast monsoon season, Tamil Nadu recorded a 14 percent increase in rainfall, totaling 447 mm compared to the average of 393 mm. Chennai experienced 845 mm of rainfall, which is 16 percent above average, while Coimbatore noted a substantial 47 percent rise.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were severely impacted by Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall between November 29 and December 1 of last year.

This cyclone caused extensive devastation, resulting in 12 fatalities and flooding 2,11,139 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land, leading to significant losses for farmers.

Furthermore, it caused considerable damage to infrastructure, with 1,649 km of electric conductors, 23,664 electric poles, and 997 transformers affected by the subsequent rains. Around 9,576 km of roads, 1,847 culverts, and 417 water tanks were also damaged during and after Cyclone Fengal.

The state government indicated that the cyclone impacted 69 lakh families and 1.5 crore individuals.

In response, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting Rs 2,000 crore in interim assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund.

The preliminary damage assessment estimated losses at Rs 2,475 crore for relief and reconstruction efforts.

The central government sanctioned Rs 944 crore as interim relief for the affected areas.
