Chennai, March 1 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has announced an alert for significant rainfall across ten districts in Tamil Nadu today.
The forecast indicates heavy precipitation driven by easterly winds, particularly impacting several coastal areas.
The weather department has reported that moderate northeasterly, easterly, and southeasterly winds at lower tropospheric levels will lead to dry conditions in isolated regions over the next 24 hours.
Heavy rain is anticipated in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanniyakumari.
The maximum temperature is projected to increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above the norm in certain areas over the next three days.
Furthermore, near-normal to slightly above-normal rainfall is expected for southern Tamil Nadu, delta regions, and neighboring districts until March 6.
In light of the heavy rain alert, the Tamil Nadu government has instructed district collectors in the delta area to collaborate with various departments and execute precautionary measures.
Officials have been directed to transfer paddy stocks stored at procurement centers to safer locations. The state government has also issued a heavy rain warning for the delta districts until March 6.
Parts of southern Tamil Nadu have already recorded rainfall, which is likely to increase due to easterly winds.
Meanwhile, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over south Kerala at 3.1 km above mean sea level has diminished, yet prevailing conditions will continue to bring heavy rainfall to the ten districts.
During the ongoing northeast monsoon season, Tamil Nadu has experienced 14 percent excess rainfall, accumulating 447 mm compared to the average of 393 mm.
Chennai has reported 845 mm, which is 16 percent above the seasonal average, while Coimbatore has seen a 47 percent rise in rainfall. This alert follows the devastation caused by Cyclone Fengal, which affected Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 29 to December 1.
The cyclone resulted in heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure system over the south Bay of Bengal. Twelve individuals lost their lives, and 2,11,139 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land were submerged, leading to considerable losses for farmers.
Cyclone Fengal impacted 69 lakh families and 1.5 crore people in Tamil Nadu.
