Chandigarh, Feb 24 (NationPress) In a remarkable instance of justice transcending traditional courtrooms, the costs and penalties levied by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on non-compliant parties are instilling fresh optimism among some of the most at-risk patients at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

Over the last two years, donations to the Poor Patient Welfare Fund (PPWF) via court-mandated deposits have surged by an astonishing 179%, climbing from Rs 89.50 lakh in 2023-24 to Rs 2.49 crore in 2024-25, according to PGIMER.

This fiscal year alone has seen contributions of Rs 2.06 crore within just 10 months, highlighting the ongoing and transformative influence of judicial assistance. PGIMER Director Prof Vivek Lal has conveyed his gratitude for the judiciary's humanitarian outlook.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Hon’ble Punjab and Haryana High Court for embracing a socially impactful approach by channeling costs imposed on defaulting parties towards vital support for the underprivileged. Each judicial ruling now translates into essential treatment, relief, and renewed hope for families in distress,” he remarked.

Prof Lal also noted that the High Court's backing has extended beyond recent events.

Throughout the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, judicial interventions were pivotal in bolstering patient care systems and ensuring responsiveness during this unprecedented public health emergency.

Praising the initiative, the Director added, “The remarkable increase in contributions has significantly bolstered PGIMER’s ability to promptly address critical cases across various specialties, including oncology, cardiology, neurosurgery, nephrology, and trauma care, where timely financial assistance can be the decisive factor between deterioration and recovery.”

For numerous families arriving at PGIMER during times of medical and financial crisis, the Poor Patient Welfare Fund functions as a vital lifeline.

This fund aids economically disadvantaged patients who lack coverage under government health schemes or insurance, facilitating access to essential medications, advanced diagnostics, surgical supplies, implants, and emergency procedures, ensuring that care is not withheld due to financial constraints.

The fund is managed through a systematic and transparent process to guarantee that assistance reaches truly deserving beneficiaries swiftly and responsibly.
