Key Takeaways
Shimla, Jan 30 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Sukhu, along with his Cabinet members and party officials, gathered on Friday at the historic Ridge Ground in the state capital to honor the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his death anniversary.
After the tribute, the Congress leaders engaged in a two-hour fast starting at 11 am to protest against the renaming and perceived dilution of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The Chief Minister criticized the BJP-led Union government for not only altering the name of MGNREGA but also for undermining its core objectives. He indicated that the scheme, which previously provided crucial employment opportunities for the youth and women in rural regions, is now facing significant reductions in job prospects.
CM Sukhu noted that in the past, village ‘pradhans’ (heads) were empowered to initiate projects such as road construction under MGNREGA, thereby ensuring jobs close to people's homes. He emphasized the scheme's vital role during the COVID-19 pandemic in maximizing employment for the populace.
However, the Chief Minister lamented that the powers previously held by panchayat pradhans have been revoked. He further stated that MGNREGA has guaranteed employment for the past two decades, including provisions for an unemployment allowance when work was unavailable.
“Today’s fasting event was organized to protest against the systematic dismantling of this scheme,” he remarked. He highlighted that previously, the Union government covered 100% of MGNREGA expenditures, a policy that has now shifted to a 90:10 funding pattern, which could negatively impact the interests of Himachal Pradesh.
In response to a question about reducing import duties on apples, the Chief Minister disclosed that he had previously discussed lowering import duties on apples from New Zealand with Union Minister Piyush Goyal. He warned that any reduction in these duties could severely affect apple growers in Himachal Pradesh. The Union Minister has requested the state to assemble a team of officers and orchardists to discuss this matter further.
