New Delhi, Jan 11 (NationPress) - On Sunday, Congress UP Chief Ajay Rai announced that party members nationwide will engage in protests and observe a fast in response to the Central government’s move to terminate MGNREGA and substitute it with a scheme he argues does not safeguard the interests of the impoverished.

Addressing the media, Rai stated, “Today, our Congress supporters will gather in protest beneath the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Bhimrao Ambedkar while participating in a fast. They are voicing their dissent against the government’s decision to conclude MGNREGA and replace it with initiatives like ‘G Ram G’, which do not adequately assist the poor. We will silently protest, observe a fast, and express our disapproval of these actions.”

He claimed that the Centre’s action has adversely affected rural employment and the livelihood security of countless families living in poverty, accusing the government of diminishing welfare systems that ensured the right to work. Rai affirmed that the Congress will persist in its protests both in public spaces and through democratic channels to defend the rights of laborers and marginalized groups.

The Congress leader emphasized that both Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar epitomized social justice, equality, and the rights of the underprivileged. Protesting under their statues signifies the party’s ideological dedication to these principles. He mentioned that the silent protest and fast aim to highlight what he terms the “systematic dismantling of pro-poor initiatives.”

Regarding Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s recent appointment as Chairperson of the Assam Congress Screening Committee, Ajay Rai commended her leadership and national appeal. “She is undoubtedly a mass leader recognized throughout the country. Her influence and presence will be felt across various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, Assam, and Kerala,” he noted, expressing optimism that her involvement would bolster the party’s organizational strategies ahead of the upcoming elections.

Rai remarked that Priyanka Gandhi’s political involvement and rapport with grassroots workers have invigorated the Congress cadre across numerous states, and her leadership will be crucial in revitalizing the party in various regions.

On the occasion of Priyanka Gandhi’s birthday on January 12, Ajay Rai indicated that the Congress will organize widespread celebrations across the state and nation. “A grand celebration is planned nationwide. Our leader is a lioness, and the entire country will honor her. Her leadership is being acknowledged throughout the nation. She will contribute wherever necessary, and we warmly welcome her,” he stated.
