Key Takeaways

I only want the welfare of the Northeast.
Whoever comes to power should remember one thing: if we think beyond politics and parties and focus first on our country and our region, then development will happen for everyone.
This is my belief, and I hope that the overall development of Assam will lead to the overall development of the Northeast.

Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath as Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on 12 May at Khanapara, Guwahati, with top leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) converging on the city for the high-profile swearing-in ceremony. The event, scheduled for around 11:40 am IST, marks the third consecutive BJP-led government in the state.

Key Leaders Attending the Ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are among the prominent national figures expected to attend. BJP National President Nitin Nabin will also be present, with party leaders describing the event as a major political occasion for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Northeast.

Several Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states have also arrived, including Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai, Tripura CM Manik Saha, and Meghalaya Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong. Notably, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has also arrived in Guwahati for the ceremony, lending the event an international dimension.

Ministers Taking Oath Alongside Sarma

In addition to Sarma, four ministers will take the oath of office — two from the BJP and one each from coalition partners, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF). Those taking oath include Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora from AGP, Charan Boro from BPF, and Ajanta Neog. Ranjeet Kumar Dass, a former minister and prominent BJP figure, is the NDA's candidate for the role of Speaker of the state Assembly.

NDA's Landslide Victory in Assam

The swearing-in follows a decisive mandate for the NDA in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections. The alliance secured 102 seats in the 126-member House, with the BJP alone winning 82 seats. The AGP and BPF each won 10 seats, cementing the coalition's dominance in the state for a third straight term.
